A new challenge
Arville is used to challenging briefs. In recent times, the company was approached by a contractor that had involvement with maritime applications that were used by the military. Now, this contractor had approached other suppliers as it required assistance with a particular problem that it was coming up against. The issue was that none of these other suppliers were able to help. That lead to them turning to Arville in the hope of finding a viable technical solution.What was the goal?
The contractor that had approached Arville was trying to carry out a particular process. This process involved two layers of fabric being combined into a laminated structure. The idea was that the end material would have different properties from one side to the other.
So, what was the issue being faced?
The problem that the contractor was experiencing was the fact that the bond between the layers were weakening and, ultimately, failing. This was due to the extreme stresses and strains that the fabric was being exposed to and the end result was that the structure was de-laminating.
This failure was becoming an issue for the contractor. They had spent valuable time, resources, and money on trying to perfect this project, but were still without success. The major issue that they were facing was that they were supposed to be a specialised military contractor and, without a solution, their credibility would soon be brought into question.
What exactly was the customer seeking?
The contractor had approached Arville with a very clear brief:

The requirement was for a woven fabric that had a natural appearance, much like cotton. However, this fabric needed to possess exceptional tensile strength in warp and weft directions

The exact strength needed was also provided. The fabric needed to achieve a tested tensile strength that was greater than 3,000 Newtons/cm

The design needed to include a receptive nylon fibre for subsequent coating

The fabric must possess lightweight properties
How Arville developed a solution
Being a specialist in materials, Arville has an extensive database that covers an array of yarn and weave constructions. With an abundance of technical experience, the company was able to identify the fabrics that could meet everything that had been requested within the brief. The company identified a weave construction that could be used to create a fabric with multiple layers with one side of the fabric having different properties from the other.
The proposed solution was to have one side which was predominately cotton, with the other side being predominately nylon. In order to keep the structure strong enough, the idea was to add reinforcement with the addition of yarn running through both sides.
The process
Given that Arville had created a completely new concept, there was a need to prepare a mock-up so that they could prove its effectiveness to the client. As Arville offers clients the opportunity to have short runs, it was able to dedicate looms just to this mock-up to ensure that it was completed within the appropriate timescales.
The mock-up was made with the same attention to detail that the final product would have. This meant that, alongside the loom work, there was a need to utilise tools that allowed for precision cutting. of course, this is where our scissors came in. The customer ultimately approved the mock-up and the final structure was to be made up of cotton, nylon, and Dyneema acting as the yarn.
The final outcome
The client was satisfied, to say the least. Arville had managed to create a bespoke piece that met all of the requirements that had been provided. By turning to Arville, this client had been able to protect its reputation by delivering on its own promises.
